15 surabaya food that shoudn't be missed

Surabaya food is not a new experience for me since I’ve been living in this City of Hero so called city for a year before moving to Bali. And now, back to my root in this second largest city in Indonesia, I have bunch of my to-eat-list which were my favourite when I was living here previously and I would love to dig in them one by one! So, I’m thinking: Why don’t I reveal some of my list in the blog with you guys, in case you are going to visit this lovely city soon?

Unique fact you would love about culinary here is you could find various streams of taste, from aromatic Arabian influence one, mild-tasty Chinese cooking, savoury-spicy Javanese influence to local extreme ones but yet will walk you back! Here is a look at what and where you should eat if you ever find yourself in Surabaya.

1. Rawon
I believe you must be ever heard about this black traditional soup as it’s quite popular even in other part of Java but what’s make even better to have a bowl of Rawon in it’s originated city? The beef soup is different from others obviously because it’s black but guys it’s more than that. The use of black nuts or what we called here as kluak as main seasoning to color the dark soup create a strong nutty flavor. Combine with other aromatic herbs and spices like ginger, shallot, garlic, chili, candle-nut, lemongrass and others plus a tasty beef stock make this soup a killer one.

Where to find it:

Jl. Embong Malang No. 78I, Genteng, Kota SBY, Jawa Timur 60261

p.s. Rawon Setan is the most popular and commercial ones among other restaurant and yet crowded. It indeed delicious but slightly offered with expensive price. I enjoyed other delicious Rawon in Depot Rawon Malang “MM”, not too crowded and offered more affordable price.

2. Soto Madura
As each part of Indonesia has it own version of Soto, Surabaya also has one which left you dreaming for have a bowl in rainy days. Rich taste of the soup are influenced by neighbor cities which once part of Surabaya, Madura — this is why it being called as Soto Madura. Unlike other Soto where mostly using chicken as main protein and other fillings like rice vermicelli and veges, Soto Madura in other hand only consist of diced beef and sometimes enjoyed with additional hard boiled egg.

In the past, Islamic immigrant come to live in Surabaya and stayed in an area called Ampel. This area is still exist until now and lived by Arabian descent whose some married with local Surabaya people. This culture influence also went to Surabaya culinary background where the food culture that they brought from Arab nowadays already become best local food that shouldn’t be missed.

8. Nasi Gudeg Surabaya
Nasi Gudeng actually originated from Jogjakarta, Central Java but Surabaya has a modification one which I fall in love with! I am a savory and spicy mouth so to be honest, I enjoyed this gudeg more than it’s original version which is sweet. The only one place you could find the best Nasi Gudeg in Surabaya is in Pasar Besar Wetan. Nasi Gudeg Bu Har is one of the local culinary legend that already established for 70 years and still exist until now. The small stall is bit old and not impressive but just ignore the view and enjoy your meal!

But when I moved to Surabaya, I was surprised because their version of Bakwan is totally different! It is meatballs, but they popularly called it as Bakwan. While meatballs is all made with in certain shape and ingredients, Bakwan has choices of varieties, from a smoothly grind bakwan to a bit rough one, from meat, pork tofu to shrimps based ingredients.

12. Lontong Balap and Sate Kerang
Lontong Balap probably one of the local dish that I know to have a unique history so far in Surabaya. In the past, rice cake sellers in Surabaya oftenly compete each other to make most delicious and quickest lontong, so they could sell it fast to customers. That is why the lontong sellers called their rice cake as Balap, which is in Indonesian simply means ricing. Different with lontong or rice cake dishes who usually served by using coconut milk curry, Lontong Balap served in a light brownies soup made from beef stock and spices, it tasted sweet and mild. The rice cake also accompanied with fried tofu, sprout, peanut cake called lento.  And guys, almost in every restaurant who sell Lontong Balap also sell Sate Kerang. This two dishes is like a twins that cannot separated one and another!

15. Bubur Madura
Finally, we come to the sweets! My number one list for you who would like to explore Surabaya authentic traditional dessert is nothing else than Bubur Madura. As I said traditional, this sweets is all use traditional ingredients such as bubur sum-sum made by coconut milk, gula aren sauce (brown sugar), pearl sago or popularly known as sagu mutiara, black sticky rice, and cendil or jenang grendul. Some of local restaurant in Surabaya serve this dishes but the best place to have it is definitely in Pasar Atom. Here you will find a lot of ladies coming from Madura sitting a long side a gang just to sell the dessert only for 2-5 hours. There is actually no place to sit if you would like to have the dessert at the place, so I suggest you to take it away.
